A drug addiction can lead an individual to do a lot of things, including breaking the law. According to a Telegraph Journal report, Dilaudid was the drug of choice for Thomas Francis Elliott. The 34-year-old came to the end of a year-long crime spree with a 30 month federal penitentiary sentence.

Provincial court Judge Court Judge Alfred Brien handed down the sentence after Elliott entered guilty pleas to 21 offenses. Included in his crimes were at least nine counts of theft under $5,000, eight probation violations and three failures to appear in court.

Six of the theft charges were associated with the pharmacy Elliot was frequenting while receiving methadone treatment. He was trying to overcome his addiction and visited the pharmacy for treatment. His efforts were rewarded with access to pharmacy property.

Judge Brien pointed out that Elliott will be able to enjoy the “silver lining” in his sentencing as he will be able to take full advantage of the drug treatment programs available in the federal justice system. He noted Elliott has an opportunity to turn his life around for his 20-month-old-daughter.

Elliot was charged with stealing around $76 in meat products form a local Co-op, $354 worth of video games from the Atlantic Superstore and three video games from Sears Canada. He was also accused of stealing Tylenol and several hundred dollars worth of baby-related and other items from the Lakewood Guardian Pharmacy.

Crown prosecutor Jill Knee suggested a federal penitentiary terms due to the sheer nature of the offences, the fact that Elliot had abused the pharmacy’s willingness to serve as a methadone treatment facility and the fact that his daughter was present while the crimes occurred.
