Replacement drugs are drugs used to try to withdraw an addicted person from an illegal drug. The most well known example is methadone used for the treatment of heroin addiction and suboxone used for the treatment of opiate addiction.
Some of these replacement drugs become a subsitute addiction and can be dangerous if abused.
